As friends, family, political associates, and well-wishers gathered to honour one of Osun’s most intellectually astute and politically grounded statesmen, Senator Dr. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the atmosphere was filled with deep admiration and high regard for a man whose life trajectory has been defined by purpose, principle, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Among the many tributes pouring in from across the country, one particularly resounding message came from Hon. Chief Adeniyi Ismail Oluwatosin (AIO), a respected APC chieftain and Advocate of Good Governance from Boluwaduro, Ifedayo, and Ila Federal Constituency, who described Senator Basiru as “a man of vision and valor, whose leadership is not only intellectual but also transformational.”

Senator Dr. Basiru, a consummate legal scholar with a PhD in Property Law, has long earned a reputation for fusing academic brilliance with grounded political acumen. He has served Osun State and Nigeria at various levels, most notably as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and later, as the distinguished Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly. He is currently the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a position that entrusts him with the responsibility of strategic planning, party cohesion, and ideological direction at the highest level.

In his tribute, Chief AIO noted:

“Senator Basiru exemplifies what it means to be a statesman in word and deed. He does not chase power for its own sake, but for the promise it holds, which are; to reform, to educate, to build, and to serve. His tenure in the Senate was marked by intellectual depth and strategic articulation of national issues. In every space he occupies, he leaves the fragrance of competence, clarity, and commitment.”

Indeed, those who have followed the career of Senator Basiru acknowledge that his journey is neither accidental nor superficial. From his days in academia, through the trenches of legal advocacy, and into the corridors of national governance, he has remained a strong advocate for justice, good governance, and the upliftment of democratic values.

His voice, always laced with thoughtful introspection and logic, continues to be a stabilizing force within the APC and beyond. His recent appointment as Chairman of the National Sugar Development Council by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an evidence to the trust reposed in him at the highest echelons of power and an affirmation of both competence and reliability.

Chief AIO further remarked on Senator Basiru’s rare blend of humility and authority.

“He is not just an administrator, he is a mentor to many and a model for all. He does not wield authority with arrogance but guides with wisdom and grace. His dedication to the ideals of the progressive movement is a constant beacon for emerging leaders like myself.”

Senator Basiru’s contributions to the state of Osun and the nation at large transcend partisan lines. Even political adversaries concede to his brilliance and depth of thought. He has been a major voice in legislative matters ranging from national security to constitutional reform, always advocating for pragmatic policies that reflect the realities of the Nigerian people.

As he marks yet another year in good health and high spirits, prayers and good wishes continue to pour in. Chief AIO concluded his heartfelt message with solemn invocations:

“May the Almighty continue to protect and guide Senator Basiru. May his wisdom never diminish, may his strength be renewed, and may his influence continue to expand for the good of Osun, for the progress of Nigeria, and for the sake of posterity.”

As the celebrations roll on, there is an unmistakable sense of pride in the air, pride in a man who has consistently proven that intellect, integrity, and service can co-exist in Nigerian politics. For many young Nigerians, particularly in Osun State, Dr. Ajibola Basiru remains a symbol of what is possible when purpose meets opportunity.
