It’s to frustrate Adeleke’s second term bid – Supporters
The proposal by Senator Lere Oyewumi, that politicians should not be allowed two terms in office, has sparked controversy, especially within the Osun State chapter of the PDP.
Senator Oyewumi, during Wednesday’s plenary on the floor of the Senate, made a bold proposal regarding the tenure of political office holders .
Commenting on the motion for a six-year single term for the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Oyewumi, popularly called Akogun, advocated for a five-year single term limit instead, suggesting that one term, with no extension, should suffice for any genuine Nigerian or patriot to effectively serve the country.
According to him, “on the tenure of the governor of the central bank, I don’t know why the mover is suggesting six years. I’m even thinking that five years is enough. One term no extension . When you stay in one office for too long, it becomes uninteresting….Do whatever thing you want to do to serve within the years and give room for another person.”
However, many supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke have reportedly interpreted Oyewumi’s statement as a veiled message aimed at Governor Adeleke’s second term ambition.
Some have questioned whether Senator Oyewumi is suggesting that Governor Adeleke should serve for only one term and then step down for him.
It is alleged that Senator Oyewumi, a first-term serving Senator, is nursing a gubernatorial ambition in the state in 2026 governorship and that his motion today was part of the plot to make a second-term bid unpopular so as to frustrate and cast aspersion on Adeleke’s re-election attempt.
The Ikire-born politician was a leading governorship aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party in 2017 until Mr Ademola Adeleke, now Osun governor, returned to the party from APC to clinch the ticket in 2018.
